September 2020 Newsletter
Written by Brenda Williams
FMHM officers and members cordially greet you this September 2020. Our prayers are that you are all well and safe as we continue to adjust to the altered lifestyle that seems to have become the normal for this time. The stringent rules for the Covid-19 virus and quarantine which began in March of 2020 remains a standard, and with the Health requirements still in force we attempt to readjust and operate accordingly.
While the regular schedules have been disrupted FMHM plans resume. Drawings for Public Restroom Facilities are approved and are posted in the Town Hall for your viewing. This Public Facility project has become one of the top priorities and deemed necessary for the Park area activities. FMHM committee representatives met with the Mayor and Board of Aldermen on September 3, 2020 where the proposal was presented to annex a structure onto the South wall of the Town Hall building measuring 8’ x 36’ and to include (2) public restrooms and (2) storage units. The addition will meet requirements needed for one each His and Her restrooms and two sheltered storage units for the FMHM project supplies. The building will be joined to the rear of the Town Hall and will be designed to compliment the existing structures. The plans are available for viewing in the Conference Room on the bulletin board at the Falkner Town Hall along with other plans and designs for the Heritage Park.
Plans are to begin immediately on the Cooper Hill Schoolhouse Restoration Project. Replacing the tin roof and aged trim boards is the first concern. The 100 year old Cooper Hill School House was relocated onto the Depot site with plans that it would be restored and serve as part of the FMHM Museum Facility as a Monument to the Historical Falkner Heritage. Plans are to secure the foundation; add a front porch entrance with a new gable to compliment the existing front; steps and a ramp for safer access into the building; new pine/lap siding, new windows, pine flooring, heat and air and insulation, making it safer and more comfortable for those who are anxious to visit one of the few One-Room School Houses still existing in this area.
FMHM project plans are hindered under the existing health requirements and prices for building materials have increased to an all-time high; however, as the funding for these projects becomes available the necessary improvements will be scheduled. A list of materials needed for the Cooper Hill School House is posted in the Town Hall and is available for your viewing. This list is made available for individuals or families, alumni or groups, anyone who would be interested in donating toward this restoration Project. Each item purchased can be noted and personally identified by having your name and date or a special message printed on it for Posterity. Boards or items can be purchased online or through any FMHM members. Your marked items with your personal message will be applied toward the building projects and restoration of our Old Town of Falkner.
